The Truth about alcohol

So you are being your obedient,
health conscious self and making sure to read the ingredients on the labels of
the hair products that you are hoping to buy.
Water, glycerin, Castor oil, perfect! Olive oil , aloe vera, great!  Shea butter, ceteryl alcohol, steryl
alcohol…. rrrrrkkks! (brakes screeching)    What!
Alcohol?  Doesn’t that dry out your hair?

Actually yes and no.  See there are good and bad alcohols. Let me
give you the run down.

BAD ALCOHOLS

These are the ones you
want to steer away from. They are actually drying alcohols which tend to
evaporate quickly and will lead to frizz and breakage. Here are some of the bad
boys you want to avoid:

Propanol

´
 Propyl Alcohol

´
 Isopropyl Alcohol

GOOD ALCOHOLS

These are known as fatty
alcohols and are derived from natural sources. You want to see these in your
products because they hydrate the  hair
and give it a smooth soft feeling by helping the cuticle to lay flat on the
surface of the hair.

ĂĽ  Lauryl Alcohol

ĂĽ  Cetyl Alcohol

ĂĽ  Myristil Alcohol

ĂĽ  Stearyl Alcohol

ĂĽ  Cetearyl Alcohol

ĂĽ  Behenyl alcohol

So the next time you feel
tempted to dismiss a product at the presence of alcohol, check to see which type
of alcohol it is, the good or the bad.

Until next time, Adios!
